Dundalk go top of the table with victory over UCD

Pat Hoban celebrates his opener against UCD

Dundalk’s title challenge stepped up a notch last night as a 2-0 win over UCD at Belfield saw them move top of the table.

Stephen Kenny’s side climbed to the summit of the table courtesy of goals from Pat Hoban and Richie Towell, with St Patrick’s Athletic dropping two points following a 1-1 draw with Bohemians.

The Inchicore men remain Dundalk’s main title rivals, however, and can take back their position at the top of the table with either a win or a draw against Derry City in their game in hand next week.

A frustrating opening to the game saw the Lilywhites having to wait until the 67th minute to open the scoring, with UCD’s Michael Kelly bizaarely sent off on the hour mark.

Good work on the left by Stephen O’Donnell saw him play a great ball into Hoban, who calmly slotted past Ger Barron.

The victory was then assured in the 83rd minute with a superb strike from Towell from the edge of the area.

Dundalk’s next outing is on Sunday week at home to neighbours Drogheda Utd.

UCD: Ger Barron, Gareth Mathews, David O’Connor, Michael Leahy (Michael Kelly 57), Tomás Boyle, Robbie Creevy, Craig Walsh (Barry McCabe 87), Samir Belhout (Cillian Morrisson 55), Robbie Benson, Dean Clarke, Seán Russell

Dundalk: Peter Cherrie, Brian Gartland, Andy Boyle, Chris Shields, Stephen O’Donnell, Patrick Hoban (Vinny Faherty 87), Kurtis Byrne (Tiarnan Mulvenna 80), Dane Massey (Jordan Keegan 89), Richie Towell, Mark Rossiter, Darren Meenan.

Dundalk will be aiming to keep their league title push on track when they travel to face UCD at the Belfield Bowl tonight.

While the students are ninth in the table, Stephen Kenny’s side will be wary of a potential banana skin against a side who beat Dundalk 3-2 in Oriel Park back in May.

Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

It has been officially confirmed that HMV will reopen in Dundalk in the Xtra-vision store at the Long Walk.

Earlier today Hilco chief executive Paul McGowan, who resides in Blackrock, confirmed via Twitter that the move was going to happen in Dundalk, with HMV reopening in Xtra-vision in the “next few weeks”.

Four HMV stores are set to reopen next month – three in Dublin and one in Limerick – while the shop-in-shop projects at the Xtra-vision outlets are expected to see a further 25 HMV stores open around the country.

HMV has already announced that it will be honouring valid gift vouchers for its stores when it reopens.
