Breathnach appointed vice chairman of Good Friday Agreement implementation group
Local TD Declan Breathnach was yesterday appointed Vice Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement at its inaugural meeting.
Speaking afterwards Breathnach, who is also a member of the Steering Committee of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly, stressed the importance of the work of this Committee particularly in light of the Brexit vote.
“We need an all Island approach to Brexit to ensure that we retain a soft border to allow for free movement of goods and trade in both directions north and south”.
“The work of this Committee will focus on reconciliation issues; commemoration issues; North-South cooperation across sectoral areas with reference to the impact of Brexit and funding programmes in addition to cross border cooperation on the economy and regional development, health, education and the environment.”
“I look forward to continued engagement with community representatives, politicians from both sides of the border, voluntary organisations, public servants, church leaders and other key stake holders on a range of cultural, economic and social issues.”
