Breathnach expresses his hope that missing Irish Coast Guard crew will be found soon
Local TD Declan Breathnach has expressed his hope that the three missing crewmen from the Rescue 116 crash will be found soon.
Amongst those missing is Blackrock man Mark Duffy with the Fianna Fáil deputy saying his heart went out to all affected by the tragedy.
“The air, sea and shore searches resumed early this morning for the missing crew – Capt. Mark Duffy, winch operator Paul Ormsby and winchman Ciaran Smith. Their colleague, Capt Dara Fitzpatrick was rescued in a critical condition but later died in hospital.
“For the family of Mark Duffy from Blackrock, Co Louth, for his wife and children and for the other families involved, this is a very harrowing time and my heart goes out to them.
“The search is focussing around Blackrock Island but I am told that conditions are very challenging due to poor weather.
“A feint transponder signal from the black box was detected in this area on Wednesday near Blackrock Lighthouse, 13km west of Blacksod on the Co Mayo coast.
“These brave crew members have saved so many lives themselves and have been involved in numerous air and sea rescues. It is so very sad now that they are the ones missing now. I commend all the rescue crews involved in the search and hope they find the crew members soon.
“A short candlelit gathering will take place at the Sundial in Blackrock at 8pm on St Patrick’s Day to give the local community an opportunity to show its solidarity and support for the family, relatives, friends and colleagues of Captain Mark Duffy and his three colleagues.”
