Dundalk advance in EA Sports Cup following penalty shoot-out win over UCD

Gabriel Sava was the hero as he saved Yousef Mahdy’s penalty to earn Dundalk a 6-5 shoot-out victory over UCD at Oriel Park last night that earned his side a place in the EA Sports Cup quarter-finals after the side’s had finished at 1-1 after extra-time.

Gary O’Neill had given the visitors a shock lead after 17 minutes with Dundalk struggling for an equaliser after that.

It looked like it wasn’t go to be their day when goalkeeper Niall Corbet saved a Ciaran Kilduff penalty midway through the second half but Conor Clifford ensured extra-time with a long range strike on 78 minutes.

Both sides converted their first five spot kicks to take the shoot-out to sudden death. Jamie McGrath then put Dundalk ahead before Sava saved from Mahdy to ensure his side’s passage into the next round of the competition.

Next up for Dundalk is a home game against Bohemian FC in the league on Friday night.
