Dundalk FC runners-up to Irish rugby team in Team of the Year poll

A survey of 1,000 sports fans, have named Dundalk FC as runners-up in the Team of the Year category.

Stephen Kenny’s side finished second to the Irish rugby team who collected the honour of Team of the Year for the third year in-a-row despite only winning six of their 12 Test matches.

The findings were contained in the 2016 Sport and Sponsorship Sentiment Index, which was commissioned by PSG Sponsorship.

Joe Schmidt’s side topped the poll on 31% of the vote, followed by Dundalk FC on 15%.

The Irish soccer team was third with 11% followed by the Connacht Rugby team (9%), Dublin senior football team (8%) and the Tipperary senior hurling team and Cork ladies football team (both 7%).

Meanwhile, Conor McGregor was named the most admired sports star, with the Irish rugby team beating the All-Blacks deemed the greatest sporting achievement.

Dundalk FC were fifth in this category for their achievement of reaching the group stages of the Europa League.
