Former Tempest family home The Garden House placed up for sale

One of Dundalk’s most iconic houses has been placed up for sale.

The Garden House on Mill Street is on the market through local estate agents REA Gunne Property for €295,000.

The four bed Victorian style house has been recently refurbished to the highest of standards and is sure to attract plenty of interest.

Inside The Garden House

The house belonged to the Tempest family, founders of Dundalgan Press, for many years before being sold in 2006. At the time the local authority was encouraged to buy it and open the garden, which contains a number of rare plants, to the public but this never transpired.

In recent years Thomas Agnew has sought to build houses on the site.

He was granted planning permission by Louth County Council to demolish The Garden House in 2007 and build 15 houses in its place but this decision was overturned by An Bord Pleanála.

He also sought permission to build 11 homes there a few years later but this was refused by the council in 2009.

Four houses have since been granted planning on lands adjacent to the property.
