The Kearney brothers Rob and David were delighted with the welcome they received in Dundalk yesterday.

The rugby stars, who come from Willville in Carlingford, were back at their old stomping ground on the Mill Road for an opening training session with the Leinster team that was attended by around 3,000 people.

Speaking to journalists at the event, elder brother Rob said it was “surreal” to be back at Dundalk RFC’s ground.

“It’s so surreal to be back here today and see such a welcome from the locals. For myself, this is where it all began,” he said.

“Me and (my brother) Dave used to play in blitzes back when we were only Under-8s and Under-10s and the field here brings back a lot of great memories.”

David was also delighted with the turnout.

He said: “It’s great to see such an unbelievable turnout (here in Dundalk). I think it’s really important for Leinster as a squad to come down here and come to the open days.

“Rugby on a whole is building so much throughout the county and it’s great to see. It’s important to come here and interact with the fans who have been so good to us throughout the year.”
