Number of private households occupied in Louth up 3.4% according to Census

There were 45,448 private households occupied in Co Louth at the time of the Census in 2016.

That represents a 3.4% increase on the 43,972 households that were registered in the county in 2011.

While the increase is larger due to previously unoccupied premises being occupied, just 908 new households were said to have been built in the county between 2011 and 2016.

Of the private households listed, 16,356 were owner occupied with a loan or mortgage, 15,145 were owner occupied without a loan or mortgage, 6,909 were rented from a private landlord, 4,248 were rented from the local authority, 582 were rented from a voluntary body and 611 were occupied free of rent. The remaining figure was unstated.

In Dundalk there were 14,443 homes occupied. This represented an increase of just 231 new occupancies between 2011 and 2016.

Of these 4,500 were owner occupied with a loan or mortgage, a decline of 11.6% from the 5,092 who had mortgages in 2011.

There were a further 4,292 owner occupied without a loan or mortgage, an increase of 4.6% on the 4,103 who were mortgage free in 2011.

Just 283 houses were rented from a private landlord, with 2,763 rented from the local authority and 1,841 from a voluntary housing body. A further 171 were occupied free of rent while 593 were not stated.

The majority of renters were playing between €150 and €200 in rent.

There were also 4,713 vacant units in the county

Meanwhile, Darver and areas of North Louth including Faughart, Jenkinstown and Ballymascanlan had the highest percentage of owner occupiers in the county.

The lowest number of owner occupiers of properties in North Louth was in the Dundalk area.
