St Patrick’s Day parade winners announced after successful event

The 2017 Dundalk St Patrick’s Day Parade once again brought thousands of people into the town centre.

The TEAM Dundalk theme for this year’s March 17th celebrations was a resounding success as the local sports, community, charity groups etc not forgetting schools all joined in celebrating Dundalk’s winning ways and team spirit.

The 2017 Parade Winners on the day were as follows:

  • 1st Parade Entry: St Mary’s College (pictured above)
  • 2nd Parade Entry: Friary Youth Club
  • 3rd Parade Entry: Scoil-Rince Mona Ni Rodaigh
  • Best Float: Fyffes
  • Best Interpretation of Theme: Dance Kids
  • Best Team Spirit: It was decided to award this to a group of Parade Entrants who are constantly showing Team Spirit – Louth Civil Defence; Dundalk Fire Service; Order Of Malta and Dundalk Red Cross

The team and community spirit was to the fore at the beginning of the parade with a short prayer, moment of silence and release of four white balloons, in honour and remembrance of the crew of Rescue 116.

Paralympic medallist Eve McCrystal accompanied by young members of her family was cheered on as she was brought through Dundalk’s main streets, proudly wearing her Irish teamwear.

She led the parade which included a specific TEAMDundalk float carrying the SSE Airtricity League title and the Joe Ward Cup along with numerous winners in their own fields including Irish Dancing, tennis etc.

Over 40 separate groups took part in this year’s parade, with huge interest in creating fantastic entries based on TEAMDundalk, making the job of this year’s judges all the more difficult.

Following the parade and despite the rain, the Market Square area remained thronged with people all lining up to go on the many amusements in the Pelican Promotions Family Fun Zone including huge slides, disco domes, bronco bulls, and much more.

Parade Chairperson David Minto said the Parade Committee are happy with how the day went.

“Thankfully the rain didn’t fall heavily enough to ruin the day. We were able to go ahead with all our plans and we were able to bring in mainly covered amusements to the Fun Zone so children weren’t disappointed.

“We’re happy that the TEAM Dundalk team was embraced by everyone taking part in the Parade and it shows that they are all part of this local TEAM that is Dundalk Town”

“At this point I have to thank our sponsors – Fyffes; Louth County Council; Longwalk Shopping Centre; Dundalk Credit Union, Dundalk Chamber; Dundalk BIDS and Pelican Promotions and also Gardai and stewards for traffic and crowd control throughout the day.”
