Youth Development Centre at Oriel Park to close this weekend

The doors to the Youth Development Centre at Oriel Park will close this weekend.

That’s according to this week’s Argus newspaper, which says former Dundalk FC owner Gerry Matthews is set to shut the €3.8 million facility in the latest development in his ongoing dispute with the club.

The paper speculates that Mr Matthews may eventually demolish the YDC to try and recoup some of the money he claims the club owe him.

Mr Matthews still holds the lease to Oriel Park but has offered to hand it over to the club along with the centre for €250,000. It is understood, however, that the club’s new owners Paul Browne and Andy Connolly have no interest in the facility and have in the past rejected claims that they owed any money to him.

They took over the running of Dundalk FC from Mr Matthews in August 2012 but the fact they do not hold the lease to Oriel Park means they have been unable to avail of the grants necessary to do up the ground.
