Ahern received almost €110,000 in pension payments last year
Former local TD Dermot Ahern earned almost €110,000 in State pension payments last year.
The former Minister for Justice, who stepped down from politics in February 2011, received €56,669 from the State purse in 2015 on the back of his 14 years at the Cabinet table.
This is on top of around €53,000 that he is entitled to in a TD’s pension, bringing his total close to €110,000.
Some 122 ex-ministers shared €3.8m in pension payments last year, averaging just over €31,000 each.
The figures were revealed recently by the Department of Finance.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio last April, Mr Ahern said he was “not exactly” sure what he was earning but said he had suffered from a “very substantial” reduction.
Former Taoisigh Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowen both took their full entitlement of €83,918 last year, which is on top of the €53,000 they get annually for their service as TDs.
