Carlingford Adventure Centre refused permission to expand boathouse

Carlingford Adventure Centre have been refused planning permission to carry out a series of alterations to their premises.

The company had applied for planning permission last month to increase the height of the boundary railings of the boathouse, sailing, windsurfing and powerboat school to 4.1m high and faced in timber.

They had also sought to provide a roof over the existing storage area at ground floor level, to carry out internal alterations and to provide a balcony with additional storage to first floor level along with glazing to part of the perimeter.

A number of local residents objected to the proposals and these were upheld by Louth County Council who rejected the application on four counts.

Firstly, it was refused on the basis it is located off the Scenic Route SR 14 Greenore-Carlingford-Omeath that it “may interfere with or adversely affect” this. One of the factors was that it was within the viewline of King John’s Castle.

The balcony was also a factor with the council saying no justification had been given for the requirement for it from a recreational use and expressed the fear it may have represented a change to social use.

The local authority also expressed the view that the development cannot be constructed in the manner outlined in the screening report submitted by Carlingford Adventure Centre Ltd.

They also rejected it on the basis that the first floor extension and balcony had the potential to overlook onto the private amenity space of an adjoining residence, thus depreciating the value of the property in the vicinity of the site.
