Culture Night 2017 up and running in Dundalk

Culture Night 2017 is officially underway in Dundalk.

The annual all-island event celebrates culture, creativity and the arts.

Things got underway in Dundalk at 2pm with a display of Banned Books at Dundalk Institute of Technology Library, and a performance an hour later by Brendan McCreanor and SJ McArdle from Kern at the front door of Dundalk BIDS & Tourist Office at Market Square, bringing up the curtain on a particularly busy night in Dundalk.

To celebrate Culture Night 2017 there will be late night opening at An Táin Arts Centre to facilitate their jam-packed programme of events.

  • 4.00pm – 10.00pm
    Exhibition and Open Studio with artist in residence Roseann Berrill in the Basement Gallery giving people a chance to talk to her about her work – Roseannn will be in the gallery up until 10pm, so feel free to drop in to talk to her.
  • 5.00pm – 5.30pm
    Family Hangout: Children’s face painting, with Linda McConville.
  • 5:00pm – 6:00pm
    Family Hangout: Try n Play session with Grow Music. Ever wondered what it feels like to play a cello? Or a violin? Is it easy to strum a guitar? How do you know which instrument to pick? Come along and try them first with Heather Oakes.
  • 5.30pm – 6.00pm
    Family Hangout: Explore the sound, light and video work that goes into a theatre production. A tech taster session with Paul Hayes in the studio theatre. Suitable for ages six years plus.
  • 6.00pm – 8.00pm
    Family Hangout: Storytelling in the Basement Gallery, with Róisín Murphy. Suitable for ages four to twelve years plus.
  • 7.00pm – 10.00pm
    Installation workshop with artist in residence, Roseann Berrill. Drop in and explore some of the tactile materials Berrill uses in her installation work. Suitable for ages eight years plus.

Also Roseann will be collaborating with Local print artist Grainne Murphy for a printmaking workshop – Grainne will be demonstrating screen printing techniques tonight with designs inspired by Roseann’s current exhibition ‘Follow The Stream’. These designs will be printed onto cotton tote bags then see the materials and techniques she uses within her work when she embellishes the prints. Call down to see this fun collaboration where print meets textiles and to grab your own custom tote bag!

Other local highlights include:

  • Linear Belongings Dundalk: Aoife Ward & Electrophonic Orchestra: Aoife Ward and the 1st German Electrophonic Orchestra, will be at Newry Road Bridge at 5pm and will make their way to the The Lock Up on the Castletown Road.
    1st German Electrophonic Orchestra: Sean Bradley, Tiffanie George, Joey Edwards and Shane Byrne. This performance is part of a series of events under the banner, The Corridor: Linear Belongings. This event goes on ‘til late https://thecorridor.ie
  • To learn more about the ancient ceramic firing process of Raku, and to make a pot you can take away on the night, get down to Creative Spark at Clontygora Drive for 7pm . This way of making pottery, using fire and smoke, originated in Japan, and relies on the ceramist’s skill, and some luck, to make a highly individual vessel.
  • At 7pm in Dundalk Branch of Louth County Libraries, Jack Lynch, storyteller,will be in situ for an evening of stories, in English and Irish followed by traditional music and dancing.   • Bridge Street Studios have a full night of poetry readings, artists’ talks, and open studios at their premises on Bridge Street. Work will be on show by all the artists, and the very brilliant poet, Barbara Smith, will be reading from her work. This event goes on until 11pm, so everyone should avail of the chance to hear great words, see great art, and talk to great people in one of the most atmospheric workplaces in Dundalk.
  • Like to be more creative and resilient, and learn more about movement and dance? ‘An Introduction to Movement Medicine’ will take place at 7.30pm at Dún Dealgan Athletic Club, Seatown. Movement Medicine is a body-based movement meditation practice. For more information, contact 083 – 8828411
