Local councillor Maria Doyle has revealed that work has already begun on the dredging of the culvert at Mounthamilton on the Ardee Road.
Sinn Féin TD Gerry Adams issued a statement to local media yesterday stating that the works were due to take place next week to prevent future flooding of the estate.
The area has been prone to flooding during heavy rainfall with a number of houses flooded in the area as recently last January.
While Deputy Adams said he had been lobbying on behalf of local residents to have these works carried out, Cllr Doyle told Talk of the Town that the work was organised at her request.
She also said the work had started in recent days with the remainder to be completed post Christmas.
She said: “I have been liaising with residents and the Council on the flooding problem in this area all year, as well as raising it at almost every municipal district meeting. I have also arranged for residents to meet Louth County Council engineers during the year. I would just like to clarify this.
“I hope for all the residents sake that the weather remains dry over the coming weeks. Last year’s flood occurred the week of Christmas.”
