Duffy completes transfer to Dundalk from Celtic

Dundalk FC have announced the signing of Michael Duffy from Celtic on a permanent deal.

The 22-year-old is set to return to the League of Ireland after a two-year spell in Scotland.

Duffy had been on loan at Scottish Premiership side Dundee but was recalled by champions Celtic on Tuesday night, and will travel to Spain on Wednesday evening to link up with Stephen Kenny’s squad at their training camp base in Salou.

The 22-year-old made the move to Glasgow from his hometown club Derry City in February 2015, and during his time there went on loan to Alloa Athletic as well as Dundee. But now he has eyed making an impact under Kenny at Oriel Park as they chase four-in-a-row.

“I’m buzzing to join Dundalk. I’m just happy now that it has finally got done. I enjoyed my two years in Scotland. I have some good memories of it; I played in some big games and made a good lot of friends. It just didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, but I still enjoyed it,” Duffy told dundalkfc.com.

“I’ve seen how well Stephen and Dundalk have been doing over the past few years. Speaking to him and listening to his plans with me, I really wanted to come here. I followed Dundalk and watched all their games in Europe and saw how well they were doing. They were very unlucky not to qualify from the group stages, so I’m hoping they can go on the same run again this year.

“Personally, I’m just hoping to get back to playing week in, week out and enjoying football again. I want to get back to scoring goals and have a good season, and hope that Dundalk have a successful season.”

Duffy – who played with Patrick McEleney and Ruaidhrí Higgins at Derry – was last year called up to the Northern Ireland senior squad by Michael O’Neill. And while reaching that level is a target, his focus is on club football for now.

“Well I’m not really going to worry about that for now because the games aren’t for a while, but hopefully I can get back into the squads again,” Michael said. “But at the minute I’m just focussing on Dundalk.”

Joining Duffy in Spain this week will be fellow new signing Steven Kinsella, who last night completed a season-long loan deal from Everton.

The pair bring to six the number of new signings by the club since the end of last season, following on from the arrivals of Sean Hoare, Conor Clifford, Niclas Vemmelund and Jamie McGrath.
