Dundalk hit Drogheda for six in Louth derby
Dundalk hit local rivals Drogheda Utd for six in last night’s Louth derby at United Park.
The 6-0 victory was the biggest of the season for Stephen Kenny’s side and represents an ideal start to the second half of the season.
The match was a tight affair up until the half hour mark when Drogheda’s Thomas Byrne was shown a straight red card for a crude challenge on Dundalk’s Patrick McEleney.
The visitors then pressed home their man advantage with three goals before half-time. The first arrived on 36 minutes when David McMillan applied the finish after a Stephen O’Donnell shot was parried.
McMillan then added a second from a Niclas Vemmelund shot soon after before McEleney hit a screamer to leave it 3-0 at half-time.
The fourth goal then arrived just before the hour mark when Michael Duffy crashed a shot high to the net with the 6-0 victory wrapped up with two goals in as many minutes from substitute Ciaran Kilduff late on.
Next up for Dundalk is a home tie with Finn Harps next Friday.
