Dundalk IT student fighting for his life after attack in Carrickmacross

A Dundalk IT student is fighting for his life at present following a street fight in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan at the weekend.

TJ Duffy (21) from Ardee, Co Louth, suffered serious head injuries in the incident on Main Street of the town shortly before 4am on Saturday.

The attacked occurred outside the Paddy Power bookmakers in Carrickmacross, close to Fiddler’s nightclub where Mr Duffy had been.

It is understood that Mr Duffy, who works in the Louth Arms pub in Tallanstown, may have been attempting to protect another man when he was injured. It is not known whether he was struck or if he hit his head when he ell.

He was found lying on the road by a passer-by who alerted Gardaí to the incident.

TJ received medical assistance at the scene before being taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. He was later transferred to the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where he remained in a critical condition last night.

It is understood he required surgery for what is believed to be a clot on his brain.

The prime suspect in the incident is a man in his 20s who fled the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have been in the vicinity of Main Street, Carrickmacross, between 3.30am and 4.15am on Saturday, and who may have a recording of the incident on their phone or dash camera, to contact them at Carrickmacross Garda Station on 042 9690190.
