The 35-year-old will then celebrate his first Mass on Monday evening at 7pm, also at St Patrick’s.

Barry hails from the St Joseph’s Redemptorist Parish in Dundalk where he was an altar server for many years. The son of Noel and Joan Matthews, he entered the seminary at the age of 29 having previously qualified as an accountant.

Barry with his family after being made a Diaconate last year

Rev Matthews, who was made a Diaconate at St Patrick’s College in Maynooth this time last year, will become the second Dundalk many in as many years to join the priesthood. Last June Damien Quigley from Cedarwood Park in Cox’s Demesne was ordained in his home church of the Holy Redeemer in Ard Easmuinn.

All at Talk of the Town would like to wish the soon to be Fr Barry well in his new vocation.
