Dundalk rugby star Tadgh McElroy made his for Saracens after replacing Scott Spurling as hooker on 48 minutes in their 29-22 defeat to Sale Sharks in the Anglo Welsh Cup at AJ Bell Stadium last night.

While McElroy couldn’t prevent the London outfit from falling to defeat, it is a huge landmark for the player, who the previous week was an unusued substitute against Harlequins.

The 20-year-old hooker from O’Hanlon Park made the switch to the Champions Cup holders in June.

A former underage player with Dundalk RFC, he signed for the London club on the back of impressive performances for the Ireland U20s during the 2017 U20 Six Nations, during which he started all five games and scored three tries against Scotland, France and Wales.

He was due to compete at the Rugby World Championship for Ireland U20s in the summer but was omitted from the squad after his move from Lansdowne RFC emerged.

Hopefully last night’s appearance is the first of many for Tadgh!
