eBay closes its doors for good in Dundalk
It’s the end of an era today as eBay in Dundalk closes its doors for the final time.
The online auction site opened at the Xerox Technology Park, off the Inner Relief Road, in April 2013 with 450 jobs promised for the town at the announcement of its arrival two months earlier.
However last August staff were informed that the facility would be closing with the loss of around 150 jobs.
eBay blamed the closure on their former sister company PayPal, who they claimed wanted the use of the full facility they shared to expand their own operations.
Despite efforts by local politicians to source an alternative location for eBay locally, no real interest was expressed by the company to remain in the area.
Staff have been leaving eBay on a piecemeal basis for the last few months with the final group of workers set to depart today. A number of staff have opted to continue working for eBay from home while the company has held one to one consultations with the remainder to help them source work.
Last September Talk of the Town revealed that eBay would have to repay IDA Ireland €846,800 of a grant support when it closes up its Dundalk operation.
