Fund for Benny Reilly raises almost €40,000 inside 24 hours

A memorial fund for former Louth footballer Brendan ‘Benny’ Reilly, who died suddenly at the weekend has raised almost €40,000 in the space of 24 hours.

The 38-year-old passed away on Saturday evening after taking ill on his way home from helping his club Naomh Mairtin to a Cardinal O’Donnell Cup semi-final win over St Mary’s.

The father of three was laid to rest yesterday with a group of his team-mates and friends coming together to set up the Benny Reilly Memorial Fund to help support his young family at this difficult time.

Brendan’s wife Lisa had recently given birth to the couple’s first son Harry, who was due to be christened last Sunday before tragedy struck.

Since being set up by Patrick Sullivan yesterday, the fund has so far taken in €39,160 and is well on course to meet its €50,000 target following 620 donations in a day.

The GoFundMe page can be found here and Patrick explained why he set it up.

He said: “Teammates and friends of Benny Reilly have come together to set up this campaign to support his young family during this difficult time.

“Benny died tragically on his way home after leading Naomh Martin’s to a semi-final win over Ardee, St. Marys.

“Benny embodied everything positive about the GAA. A steely competitor on the pitch and a true gentleman off it – he was loved throughout the county.

“He leaves behind him his loving wife Lisa, Saoirse (4 years), Amy (2 years) and Harry (2 months).

“We hope you will consider contributing to a great man’s memory.

“Thank you!”
