Local athlete Gina Akpe-Moses was celebrating today after being named U20 Athlete of the Year at the Irish Life Health National Athletics Awards in Dublin.

The former St Gerard’s AC and Blackrock AC runner, who now trains in Birmingham, hit the headlines this year when she won the 100 metre event t the European Under 20 Championships in Italy.

Following her win in Grosetto, Gina has targeted further medals at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

The 18-year-old former St Vincent’s student will be hoping her win today is not the first before Christmas as she is also nominated for The Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Year award later this month having been named Sportswoman of the Month for July.

Kilkerley man Gary O’Hanlon, who runs with the Clonliffe Harriers club in Dublin, also picked up the National Marathon title for being the first Irish finisher in October’s Dublin Marathon.
