A local Lotto winner has revealed he bought a modest second hand car with high mileage despite scooping a €3.6 million jackpot.
Simon Fagan from Duffy’s Cross near Darver collected a cheque for €3,595,558 in May 2013 but speaking on the Sean O’Rourke show on RTÉ yesterday the St Joseph’s GFC clubman revealed rather than splashing out on a fancy car, he bought a second hand Kia with his winnings. The car now has 150,000 miles on the clock with Simon only learning to drive after his win.
Simon, well known as a GAA umpire in Louth, was speaking as part of the National Lottery’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
He explained the nerve wracking moment that he watched his numbers come out.
He said: “I was sitting watching the draw live at the time and seen the first few numbers come out. I said to myself, ‘Ah the usual three numbers’, and the the fourth was called, and the fifth one.
“I said to my brother beside me, if number 22 comes out we’re in business!
“The girl called out number 22 and I just couldn’t believe it. I didn’t realise how much was in the jackpot at the time.
“It was only at half 9 that evening when the radio was put on on a loud blast – only one winner in the north east €3.6 million – so I knew then.”
