Louth Minors kicked off their Leinster Minor League campaign with a hard fought 1-8 to 0-9 victory over Wicklow in Darver this afternoon.

Conor Whelan opened the scoring for the Wee County with a free on eight minutes but the visitors responded with two points to take the lead before the crucial score of the match arrived in the 18th minute when full forward Ross Nally hit the net to leave it 1-1 to 0-2.

Two further Wicklow points saw them claw back level by the 24th minute but a point from Nally restored Louth’s lead before the visitors responded once more to leave the sides level at the break on a 1-2 to 0-5 scoreline.

Wicklow briefly took the lead on the restart but a point from Whelan and two frees from Nally had the home side back in the ascendancy at 1-5 to 0-6 by the 40th minute.

Despite the Garden County twice cutting the deficit back to the minimum, a further point from Nally and two late frees from Whelan ensured the Wee County made a winning start in Group Four.

Next up for Louth is a home game against Tipperary next Saturday followed by an away trip to face Laois on Saturday February 27th.

Louth Minors: P McArdle; R Levins, C Kenny, J Culleton; E McDaid, E Keenan, I Connor; L Crosbie, C Greenan; B Matthews, C Callan, J Corrigan; S Mulroy, R Nally (1-4, 2f), C Whelan (0-4, 2f).
