McGrath hat-trick gets Dundalk back to winning ways
A Jamie McGrath hat-trick and another from Niclas Vemmelund saw Dundalk return to winning ways with a 4-0 victory over Sligo Rovers at Oriel Park last night.
Having lost their last two matches to Galway Utd and Shamrock Rovers, Stephen Kenny’s side ran out convincing winners in the end over the visitors to close the gap to leaders Cork City back to 13 points following their 1-1 draw away to Galway Utd.
The opening goal arrived on 54 minutes when McGrath fired through the legs of Sligo goalkeeper Micheal Schlingermann to make it 1-0.
The former St Patrick’s Athletic player then doubled his side’s advantage on 72 minutes by beating Schlingermann again from the edge of the box.
Vemmelund then added a third in the 90th minute when he headed to the net from a Michael Duffy free kick before McGrath completed his hat-trick deep into stoppage time by converting a penalty.
Dundalk will now hope to carry this form into their next league match away to Limerick on Friday. Before then they play Thomastown Utd in the Leinster Senior Cup in Oriel Park on Monday.
