There are now 4,405 people on the social housing waiting list in Louth, according to new figures published by The Irish Times.
The newspaper contacted all 34 local authorities on their latest figures on the number of people waiting for council houses, with 21 responding.
Of the 21 who responded, only five local authority areas had a higher figure than Louth’s and each of those was in either Cork or Dublin, the two major population centres.
The report also found that this figure of 4,405 had increased by 16% in the last year, which shows that the problem is only worsening.
Despite this, that rise was only the second smallest nationally after Fingal (7.6%).
