O’Donnell backs Dundalk to still be top dogs next season despite Towell’s departure
Dundalk FC captain Stephen O’Donnell has warned the club’s rivals that the Lilywhites will still be aiming for the title next season despite losing leading scorer Richie Towell to Brighton on Monday.
Replacing the midfielder’s 29 goals next season will be a challenge for Stephen Kenny’s side but O’Donnell told today’s Irish Daily Mirror that he believes the champions are more than up to the task.
“Look, of course it’s a big blow to lose Richie,” said the 29-year-old.
“Scoring goals is the hardest part of this game and that was an outrageous return for a midfielder – we’ll probably never see anything like it again – but I’d be very confident in our manager getting the right replacements.
“You mightn’t replace one for one, it could be a couple of players coming in, but don’t forget we’ve still got brilliant players here.
“And if you can add to what we have, you’d be very happy with the direction we’re going in.
“The lads have a great attitude, they’re hungry and I see no reason why we should stop being very competitive and being the team to beat.”
