Last Thursday, ‘Once in a Lifetime’, a documentary which retells the story of Dundalk FC’s 1979/80 European Cup campaign, was aired Setanta Sports Ireland.

For those who missed it, fear not as the full programme is now available to watch online and is certainly worth a watch.

Produced by Square 1 and adapted from real-life testimonies and interviews with players, the documentary film examines the themes of solidarity, strength and community throughout the club’s European campaign which saw them take on Linfield, Hibernians of Malta and Glasgow Celtic.

“In 1979, Dundalk Football Club would cement their place in Irish football folklore. Their odyssey in the European Cup in that year has never been matched by an Irish soccer team,” said writer, producer and director, Shane Tobin.

“It was a journey that seen drama and tension on and off the pitch, in what would become a truly memorable year for the team. It was the first time a team from Northern Ireland and a team from the Republic had ever met in Europe’s premier soccer competition.

“This is the story of that once in a lifetime journey, told by those who lived it charting all the events from the tension that erupted in the Linfield games, the rioting, the surreal trip away to Holland, a summer trip to play Malta and also the culmination of years of hard work and effort as they took on Glasgow Celtic in the biggest game of their lives.

“One of two games no one in the town has ever forgotten for totally different reasons.”
