Record Store Day returns to Dundalk this Saturday
Record Store Day is coming back to Dundalk this Saturday.
Record Store Day is an annual event inaugurated in 2007. Now in its 10th year, it aims to “celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store.”
The day brings together fans, artists and thousands of independent record stores from across the world.
Classified Records in the Demesne Shopping Centre have been confirmed as an official participant this Saturday and are inviting all music fans along on the day.
Classified Records will open early at 9am on Saturday to facilitate keen collectors and on the day there will be some exclusive one-off discount offers on some popular instore stock albums.
There will also be live DJ sets instore by local superstar DJs and with a thriving vinyl collectors’ community in the area, owner Neil Waters is advising people to get down early to avoid disappointment.
He commented: “Record Store Day is a huge global event. It’s truly a special day for vinyl collectors everywhere. It’s massive for everyone involved and we’re very proud to be able to bring this event to Dundalk again. With such a vibrant music scene in the area, this event adds to the bubbling fountains of creativity.
“It’s important that we keep Dundalk on the map musically, we’ve carved out a great name for the area in terms of the musical output of the last 6-7 years and this a major plus to the north-east region. People all over the country are sitting up and taking notice of Dundalk’s music scene and we here at Classified Records are extremely proud to be able to keep the momentum going,” said Neil.
Record Store Day is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store — the staff, the customers, and the artists. They will come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities. Special vinyl releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day.
Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet and greets with artists, parades, DJs spinning records, and on and on. In 2008 a small list of titles was released on Record Store Day and that list has grown to include artists and labels both large and small, in every genre and price point.
In 2015, 60% of the Record Store Day Official Release List came from independent labels and distributors. The list continues to include a wide range of artists, covering the diverse taste of record stores and their customers.
While there’s only one Record Store Day a year, the organisation works with both independent and major labels throughout the year to create contests, special releases and promotions in order to spotlight the benefits of supporting these independent, locally owned stores with music purchases throughout the year.
Among the exclusive material up for grabs this year are releases by Pink Floyd, Iggy Pop, Neil Young, Prince, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Bowie, U2, Sex Pistols & many, many more….the list of available records will be embargoed until the day itself.
