Residents evacuated after explosion in Dundalk estate overnight

Residents of Rockfield Manor on Hoey’s Lane were evacuated from their homes in the early hours of this morning following an explosion in the estate.

The incident occurred around 2.15am when an improvised explosive device detonated in the housing estate, close to Dundalk IT.

A number of houses were evacuated following the incident, with residents only returning to their homes around 6.30am after army bomb disposal experts had declared the area safe.

The area is being preserved for technical examination this morning while the remains of the device have been taken away for forensic examination.
