The Ard Easmuinn/Ecco Road in Dundalk has been closed off in both directions amid reports of a pipe bomb being discovered in the garden of a property in Aisling Park in Cox’s Demesne.

Gardaí have closed off the road from the Clan na Gael football field to its junction with the Castletown Road. Diversions are in place.

The suspect device was discovered by a passer-by at around 5.45pm with the bomb squad called for. They arrived on the scene shortly after 9pm. Around 18 homes were evacuated as a precaution.

In a separate incident the Bellewsbridge Road is closed at its junction with the M1 flyover. Diversions are in place via the Mill Road and Castletown Road.
