St Peter’s NS clinch Leinster Primary School Soccer Competition
Having won the Spar North Leinster Primary School Soccer Competition last month, the sixth class pupils from St Peter’s NS in Dromiskin went one better last week by winning the Leinster Final in Meath.
With quality teams from Dublin, Wexford and Laois in the final shake-up the team travelled knowing they would have to really up their game to progress further.
Their first game saw them face the Wexford champions Castletown NS, where quick goals at the start of each half gave them a comfortable 3-1 victory.
The Dublin champions from Model NS were next and in a thrilling display from both teams St Peter’s NS emerged on the right side of a 3-2 victory.
With the Gaelscoil from Portlaoise having dropped a point in the earlier round, a win or a draw would put St Peter’s through as winners.
The Laois team grabbed an early goal before dominating in defence and seemed destined for victory. However the hard work and persistence of St Peter’s NS paid off with a second half equaliser.
The Dromiskin team then blocked everything their opponents threw at them in the last few minutes and were even unlucky not to win in the end.
The scenes of excitement were unbelievable when Mr McComish’s team lifted the Spar Leinster Soccer Final Cup. They now progress to the All Ireland Finals at the end of May in the Aviva Stadium.
The full squad gave their all during the Leinster Final and the following boys – Sean Allen, Cian Sheridan, Rory McLoughlin, Nathan Todd, James Woods, Jake Kenny, Ryan Doran and Evan McEnteggart – received a heroes welcome on Friday morning when their 250 fellow pupils, a large number of parents and the school staff greeted them enthusiastically in the school grounds.
We wish them every success in the All Ireland Finals at the Aviva Stadium later this month.
